Licensing, Accreditation and Certification |
| Licensing is nothing more than the granting of permission to someone or something (like a corporation or company) by some authorized agency, usually governmental and empowered by some public act and carried out through administrative rules. In some instances, licensure is mandatory. For example, a nursing home providing organized care and medical treatment in a residential setting to seven or more unrelated people is required to be licensed by the Michigan Department of Community Health. Just remember, licensing is a state function. |
On the other hand, there is certification. This is a distinction, and it is usually voluntary. Generally, providers desiring to receive Medicare/Medicaid payments for services must obtain and maintain Medicare/Medicaid certification and meet state and federal regulations for certification. |
| Lastly, there is accreditation. This is a formal recognition or set of guarantees that an agency or program of some sort meets and will maintain during operation a certain set of predefined standards and provide quality. CARF and JCAHO are two of our most utilized accreditation authorities. |
